Q: What days are counted towards my 60 days of FMLA leave?
A: Your regularly scheduled work days count towards your 60 days of FMLA leave, including student contact and in-service days. Weekends or normally scheduled days off do not count towards your 60 days.
Q: How is my pay calculated after my time off?
A: Any unpaid time will be reconciled for the rest of the year and split over your remaining pay.
Each of your contracted days earns a portion of your annual salary. If you are unpaid for one of those days, it must be deducted from your annual salary. The remaining amount is then factored against what you already have been paid for the year. The amount that remains after subtracting your unpaid time and pay already received is then divided by the remaining pay.
If you take unpaid time during FMLA, your pay will be less than what you normally receive.
Q: What are my responsibilities during my FMLA leave?
A: You must:
- Inform HR [Nicole White x1300, Caitlyn Ostrander x1301, and Quinn Heintz x1302] about any changes to your planned time off. Including if it begins earlier or later for any reason.
- Inform HR [Nicole White x1300, Caitlyn Ostrander x1301, and Quinn Heintz x1302] when you return to work, and provide a doctor’s note to HR (prior to returning to work) as required.
- For maternity or paternity leave, please provide the baby's full name, DOB, and which insurances you would like to add them to as soon as possible. There is only 30 days from birth to make these changes.
- If you have the Short-Term Disability benefit, please contact Caitlyn Ostrander x1301 as soon as possible for your first day of leave to start the claim. It can take several days to process and you will not receive any pay from The Standard until it is submitted.
Q: I pay for the Short-Term Disability benefit. How does that work?
A: A claim must be submitted to The Standard for them to process your payment. This involves information submitted by you, HR, and your physician.
You must be unpaid by the district while you are receiving pay from The Standard. Until your claim is processed, you will not receive funds from the district or The Standard.
There is a 14-day waiting period until Short-Term Disability benefits begin. You can use your paid leave time during this period until The Standard begins to pay.
Short-Term Disability goes by calendar days, not work days.
Q: What if my FMLA dates change?
A: Please update HR [Nicole White x1300, Caitlyn Ostrander x1301, and Quinn Heintz x1302] as soon as you are aware of a date change. This affects your pay, absences, and sub (if applicable).
Q: Do I owe health insurance deductions while on FMLA?
A: You will owe your regular insurance deductions. If you are still being paid by the district, they will be deducted as usual from your pay. If you are currently not receiving pay from the district, you still need to pay your deductions via check dropped off to the Business Office. If you quit after an unpaid FMLA leave or request an Extended Leave of Absence, and you have not returned to work for at least 30 days, you will owe the district the employer paid portion of the insurance benefits. This means your benefits will be reconciled to calculate the percentage you have earned and you will owe the difference.
